Member Profiles

When I first rode with the Trailblazers I didn't know a soul but the members were so helpful that I soon felt at home in the club. Probably the hardest part about joining a club is the feeling of NOT being a member when you first attend events. To make that hurdle a bit easier to jump I thought it would be helpful to introduce some of the members you might meet on a trail ride so at least you'll know who we are. Also, as we all don't get to attend as many rides as we'd like to, this page can be helpful to those who are already members but haven't had the chance to meet everybody (or, it can be helpful if you're feeling old and decrepit like me, can't remember your wifes birthday, kids names, or who you met on a ride 4 weeks ago ;-) If you're a member and would like to see your profile here please send me the information and I'll add it. Send to: ctbbio(at)mufflerbearings.com. Send a photo too as you may not like the one I choose (I'll ALWAYS choose the BEST photo though ;-).

Steve Kiger

Family: DWM seeks SWF for meaningful relationship.  Must have 4x4.  Send photo of 4x4.  Son-Chase 5 year old -soon to be professional basketball player
Hobbies, etc: Golf, hiking, playing w/ 5 yr. old, drinking beer, Rotarian. I became active in the trailblazers to fulfill my desire to; camp/be outdoors, and tinker around with vehicles. I do most all of the work on my 4runner except for things that require welding/fabrication.

Steve drives a Toyota 4Runner (when it's not flopped over):

Dennis Vaders - Web Master

Occupation: Mechanical Engineer (Virginia Tech), Inventor: 10 US Patents (I think)
Employer: Masonite Corporation. I work out of my home in Elkin and travel to our facilities in Mississippi, Chicago, Ireland,Chile and South Korea.
Hobbies: Four wheeling, of course, and building stuff for my vehicles. Caving, bicycling, back packing, travel.

Web Sites: www.mufflerbearings.com , www.members.tripod.com/~SuperSwamper/index.html (old site but still some good info)

I have 3 kids and a wife, Linda, that think spending good money on a vehicle just to destroy it on a 4 wheeling trip is pretty stupid (I think the wife brain washed the kids!) My 3 kids were all accepted to Duke University so perhaps I AM the stupid one ;-) My daughter is now at Duke so I'm stupid AND broke I guess. Oh, I have 2  Jeep TJs and a Suzuki Samurai built for the trails plus an F150, a Mini Cooper, a Chevy Prism, a Nissan 240sx and a Lotus Elise.

Don and Darlene Custer:

We live near the small town of Rockwell NC (about an hour NE of Charlotte). I used to say that Darlene and I were just average middle-aged country folks, but after giving that some more thought, I don't believe we are. Most average middle-aged country folks don't do the things we do, and many of them think we're crazy for doing it. Anyway, we are middle aged, still of sound mind (I think), and so far in good health. We are both originally from the Eastern-Ohio / Western-Pennsylvania area of the country. We moved here in June of 1985, and we plan to spend the rest of our lives here. We love North Carolina and think it's a darn nice place to live. Darlene and I were married in January 1973 and we have two sons. They are both married and now have families of their own.

My co-pilot is my 11 year old son, Casey, who has been riding with me since he was 6. He and I have a wonderful time riding, camping, cooking out and sharing time with this club. Education: Horticulture Degree, N.C. State University Occupation: Self-employed as a Landscape Contractor since 1987. Family: Wife Robin, real estate agent, daughter Candace, volleyball fanactic, son Casey, still undecided about his first vehicle, a Jeep or a truck. He definitely wants a 4wd. Jim O'Kelley
My name is Jim O'Kelley and I drive a 97 Green 1997 Jeep TJ usually with my long red haired traveling companion "Red" on his custom platform in the side or back of the Jeep. Red is my dog. We live in Sanford, NC. I am 67 years of age and still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. It's said an Irishman can only be three things: (a). a soldier (b.) a cop or (c.) a priest. Since I am a Protestant I can't be a priest but I have been a soldier, deputy sheriff in Florida, and a Salvation Army officer (Pastor). Therefore I have "nailed" all three. I joined the US Amy when I was 15 years of age and retied from Special Forces (Green Beret) in 1978 after 28 years of service. Two son's followed me into service as Airborne, Ranger, Special Forces qualified. My oldest Sean was killed in 1987 while in Ranger School. My youngest, Patrick retired from Special Forces in 2000 and currently is a JROTC Instructor at Lee County High School and that is why I am in the part of NC because that's where my three granddaughters live. My wife of 39 years and I separated in 1997. BTW that's when I bought my Jeep. No connection. My wife thinks I am crazy and should be in a rocking chair and NOT doing what I do because I am 90% military service connected "disabled" from the VA but because of unemployabilty I receive 100% in benefits. Because of my back condition ( crushed in a parachute jump in 1974 with two surgeries since) you will not see me doing any heavy lifting. I tell you now so you won't think I am lazy or don't want to help on work weekends. I have injuries from my neck to both knees to include cancer from Agent Orange in Vietnam and that limits what I am able to do without severely hurting myself. I am a lifetime member of two 4X4 clubs in South Carolina and was previously with CNC 4WD Club prior to joining Trailblazers. I wish I had joined Trailblazers when I first made a visit a couple of years ago. I just missed out riding with great folks during that time. I have not been able to make any rides with Trailblazers this years to date (this is written in May 2002) because of surgery on both eyes at the Durham VA but I am now "ready to roll". My Jeep "General Lee" ( I am a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans) is almost done. Is a Jeep ever "done"? It is locked front and rear, 33 X 12.50 Super Swampers, Warn 9000i winch, Warn axles in the front and Superior in the rear, Tomkens skids front to rear, etc. See ya on the trails. Jim

John A. Barclay IV
I was born, bred and raised in Las Cruces NM. After a short stint at NMSU, I moved to Albuquerque and worked in the music business for 11 years. I then moved to Richmond Virginia and opened up Cobblestone Brewery. After the shine wore off of that, I met this real pretty girl (Janet) who lives in Greensboro NC and teaches at GTCC in the dental department.. I married her, sold my shares in the brewery and we moved to High Point NC. I have a wonderful son nick named Quint cause he is John the 5th (I'm the 4th). I recently sold my 73 yellow CJ5 that I owned for 21 years. I have a big blue built 81 CJ7 now along with a Chevy tow-truck and an Aliner off-road edition camper to complete my off-road rig. I enjoy my family and Jeeping.

Joe Carter
I am 41 , have 5 sons - one in the Navy, one at NCSU Engineering , and 3 at home . I've been 4wheelin since high school . I have owned many 4wd vehicles , but my favorite so far is my '96 Ford Bronco. I also own a '72 CJ-5. I don't get to ride with the club as often as I would like because I am self employed. I own/operate Viewmont Vacuums in Hickory.

Chip Price
My name is Chip Price. I am a new member to the club, but not new to "Fourwheelin" I own several 4X4's but my drug of choice is my 85 CJ-7 It runs on 35X16X15 super swamper boggers, with full size Chevy axels, 4:10 gear, ARB air Lockers front and rear, T176 trans, and Dana 300 transfer case. Engine is a AMC360, Full Cage, and Warn 8000lb winch. All together, not pretty, but functional. I am soon to be married(again) I have three kids Rhett(Mr. Music) Josh( has the 4wheelin fever, ie: three scouts to make one, and a Suzota) and Michelle, 14, and well you know the rest! Leslie, my soon to be has two of her own, Laura, and Daphne As said before, I am not new to fourwheeling, I am 40 something, and been into it since my first Jeep, a 48 Willys. Old man Ken Stevens, has been after me for a while to join, so I figured now was a good time, I look forward to wheeling with this bunch, nothing but good has been shared with me. So, untill the first ride! See ya
